Associate Professor Nhlanhla Mpofu is a higher education leader with an established global career, having held academic and leadership positions in Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, the United States, and Belgium. Her distinguished international profile includes fellowships such as a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Fellowship with European partners, complemented by visiting professorships at institutions in Belgium and the USA. Her research focuses on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Literacy, critically examining pedagogical strategies within multilingual, superdiverse, English-medium classrooms. She champions asset-based approaches that centre students’ linguistic and cultural resources as fundamental learning tools. A sought-after keynote speaker, she addresses pressing topics including inclusivity, translanguaging, and navigating superdiverse educational landscapes.
Deeply committed to academic development, she has successfully mentored a significant cohort of PhD and MEd candidates to completion. Their research foci included critical thinking in TESOL, digital literacy, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), and English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI).
