Recognition of prior learning

Turn your experience and previous study into progress towards your degree
Recognition of prior learning

Get qualified without pressing pause on life

At CIHE Australia, we recognise that learning doesn’t only happen in classrooms. If you have completed previous study, training or relevant professional experience, you may be able to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or course credit.

RPL can help you avoid repeating learning you already have and focus on building new knowledge and skills.

What is RPL?

RPL is a formal assessment process that considers your previous learning – whether it was gained through study, training or professional experience – and determines if it meets the learning outcomes and academic standards of subjects in your course.

If approved, RPL may be granted as course credit. If you are granted course credit, this may shorten the length of your program and help you save on tuition fees.

  • Higher ed or vocational study

  • Industry certification

  • Relevant work experience

  • Structured learning

Who can apply?

Who can apply?

You maybe be eligible for RPL if you have completed formal or non-formal study such as in the examples above.

RPL is available to both domestic and international students, subject to course requirements. All applications are assessed individually against the learning outcomes of the subjects in your chosen course.

How RPL can help you

How RPL can help you

RPL may help you to:

  • reduce the number of subjects you need to complete
  • shorten the overall time required to finish your degree
  • avoid repeating learning you already have
  • focus your studies on new and advanced knowledge

Approval of RPL depends on your individual application, evidence provided and alignment with subject learning outcomes. RPL is also subject to course-specific limits.
